THE EASY WAY OUT FOR CONSTIPATION
Constipation, a difficulty in emptying faeces or stools out of the bowel, can affect almost everyone at one time or another. A change of diet, a lack of exercise, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement, some medications and some diseases can all impact on someone’s risk of constipation. It is important to remember that constipation can become serious if left for too long without treatment. Understanding causes, prevention and treatment will help most people find relief.
WHAT IS SOFLAX USED FOR?
SOFLAX is used for the relief of constipation.
WHAT IS IN SOFLAX?
SOFLAX is made up of two active ingredients which work together in different ways to help relieve constipation.
Senna
is a naturally occurring product derived from the dried and purified senna leaf.
Docusate sodium
helps to gently soften the stool. You may have heard of this before as it is also used in some ear drops to help with wax removal.
HOW DOES SOFLAX WORK?
Constipation often occurs as a result of food not flowing through the intestine quickly enough. This makes the stool harder and drier. The longer it remains in the one spot, the more water it loses, leading to an even drier and harder mass.
SOFLAX has two active ingredients which can work together in a complementary partnership.
The senna in SOFLAX acts to stimulate nerves in the intestine. This stimulation increases the ability of the intestines to move the stool downwards. The medical word for this movement in the digestive tract is peristalsis. This senna-produced peristalsis ensures the stool maintains its water content and therefore does not harden.
The docusate works by stimulating the intestine to secrete fluids. By increasing the amount of fluid which can penetrate into the faeces, a more delicate softening of the stool occurs.
HOW LONG DOES SOFLAX TAKE TO WORK?
Generally, it will take no longer than a day or two to have its full effect. The effects will not happen all at once, but rather occur in a gradual fashion.
HOW TO TAKE SOFLAX?
It is helpful for the patient to take SOFLAX with a large glass of water.
Adults and children 12 years and over can take up to three tablets at bedtime. Children 6 to 11 years can take up to 2 tablets at bedtime. The SOFLAX will most often have its effect the very next day.
WHO MAY NEED SOFLAX?
Pregnant women - during pregnancy, the whole digestive system is influenced by hormonal changes. These hormones can slow down intestinal movements, thereby making women more prone to constipation. SOFLAX may be taken by pregnant women but advice from a healthcare professional should be obtained before use. SOFLAX is also helpful for women who have just had a baby and who should not strain themselves.
People who cannot risk over-straining themselves during defecation. This can include people who have just undergone surgery, who have haemorrhoids, those with hernias, and even people who have had a recent heart attack.
Anyone with severe constipation which has resulted in an inability to empty the bowel.
ADVICE FOR PATIENTS
Increase fibre in the diet and drink plenty of fluids. Regular exercise can be helpful.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about Soflax or constipation.
Always read the label before taking Soflax. Use Soflax only as directed. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice. Frequent or prolonged use is undesirable and may lead to dependence.
